CHAPTER FIFTEEN

LAYLA

After taking a bath and changing into another dress, this one baby pink, I sit down for my food at the table that’s nestled between the windows. Kerry hasn’t left my bedroom, and Amanda arrives back in. Amanda tidies the area while Kerry brushes my hair. I’m glad I don’t have to wear my sling anymore. I can move my arm more, but brushing my hair won’t be easy.

It’s been hours since Jared dropped me off, and when he enters my room, there’s a clear shift in the air.

He juts his chin toward me and lowers his eyebrows. “You okay?”

The sandwich I’ve been eating feels lodged in my throat. “What’s wrong?” I get up, and Kerry steps away from me.

Jared holds up his hands. “Nothing.”

Everything.

“Can you give us the room?” Jared addresses Kerry and Amanda.

“Yes, Master Jay.” Kerry holds out her arm toward Amanda to hurry her up. Amanda places the clothes she was holding onto the bed, and within seconds, the bedroom door closes, and it’s just Jared and me. I get up as Jared steps closer to me, and the way he’s looking at me makes me unbalanced.

“I love you, Layla.” Jared touches my face.

“I know. I love you too.” Fear finds its way into my words. “What’s going on?”

Jared touches his lips against mine before releasing me. “We need to go to the Gardaí about Chester. He left another message, and I’m realizing he won’t be going away.”

My legs should buckle; my body should sag. I should be overwhelmed with relief, but I’m not. Instead, I have this feeling of being smothered, and it overshadows everything else as I stagger away from Jared.

“But we lied. We can’t just change our minds. They’ll know.”

“No, they won’t,” Jared reasons. “You had memory loss. You just got your memory back.”

I can sense the edges of hysteria at the thoughts of going to the Gardaí after lying.

“You never lied to them, Layla. At the time you gave your statement, you didn’t know.” Jared speaks as if he read my mind.

“What about you? Are you okay with lying?”

Jared’s smile is quick, and it drips with a silent story of hurt and pain. “Yeah, I’m good with lying to them.”

My stomach coils as if I’ve swallowed something poisonous. I turn to try to find some of my footing, but Jared’s arms circle me, and I’m against his solid chest.

“When we were kids, I rang them to help us,” Jared whispers in my ear. “And they didn’t.” His voice is low, but his words are loud. Hot pain burns a path right down to my tattered soul. “I rang them so many times when he was—”

I turn in Jared’s arms, and he lets me. I’m expecting to see a pair of dark eyes filled with unshed tears, but the only thing Jared’s gaze is filled with is hardness. His arms drop to my waist, and I rest my hands on his chest. “So I’m okay with lying to them, Layla.”

My anger is hanging on by a thread, and it snaps as I lean against Jared’s chest.
